Prize: $10,000

6 nominations – Judges: Ruth Starke, Anne Bartlett, Mike Ladd

Winner

Nicole Plüss: Alone with Me

The judges acknowledged that Nicole is a well respected and accomplished writer for young people. “Her writing is sharp and distinctive, while an additional strength is her ability to convincingly represent the contemporary teenage voice and viewpoint.’ Nicole’s subject matter is always topical, and importantly, relevant to today’s youth. With a particular focus on the pressure on teenage girls in an increasingly sexualized youth culture, the judges agreed that Alone with Me will enable young readers to embrace, in the writer’s words, a diversity of expression and the realisation of a strong independent self-hood. Nicole is committed to the representation of teenage sexuality and ideologies of identity and with numerous previous published works to her name, the judges are convinced that her new novel, Alone with Me, will be an important addition to young adult fiction.
